Correction/Treatments for crowded teeth

Crowding is a dental malposition caused by a lack of space, which moves the teeth, leading to twisted and improperly aligned teeth. The perfect spacing between teeth allows for even growth without crowding or space gaps. The teeth should come into contact with each other without interfering with the tooth’s normal rotation. When biting down, the top teeth should slightly overlap the bottom teeth, aligning tightly and comfortably. In addition to being a cosmetic issue, dental crowding is also a health concern, since crowded teeth are more challenging to clean and therefore prone to getting cavities and gum disease. The malocclusion and incorrect bite can also lead to issues with the jaws (TMD and TMJ issues).

Causes of Tooth crowding

There are various genetic, environmental, and developmental factors that contribute to tooth crowding. Here are a few common reasons:
  • Tongue thrusting
  • Insufficient jaw size
  • Irregular tooth size
  • Prolonged thumb sucking and pacifier use
  • Losing baby teeth prematurely due to decay
  • Impacted teeth
  • Orthodontic relapse
  • High-arched or narrow palate

Treatments for crowded teeth

Given the patient’s health history and the degree of their malocclusion, a dentist can recommend the best course of treatment.

Braces

Metal braces are the most popular form of braces used to correct tooth crowding. Traditional braces are less expensive and include gold or silver brackets bonded to the teeth to treat mild to severe crowding, jaw abnormalities, and other dental issues. Additionally, the orthodontist might attach small rubber bands that connect the brackets together. In addition to metal braces, patients might choose ceramic braces with enamel-colored brackets, damon or self ligating braces customized for each orthodontic treatment.

Clear aligners

Clear aligners, such as Invisalign and ClearCorrect, are transparent, thin, plastic-like trays that are custom-made according to a person’s teeth. They provide a more discreet option for straightening teeth and are often used for mild to moderate cases of crowding. Patients are responsible for putting their aligners in and taking them out. To shift teeth, a sequence of aligners is created. Each aligner is worn for one week and shifts teeth by a fraction of a millimeter at a time. Patients must remove their aligners before eating and brushing or flossing their teeth. The number of aligners required to straighten misaligned teeth varies depending on the orthodontic condition.

Retainers

A retainer is a custom-made appliance that you wear over your teeth in your mouth. In order to prevent orthodontic relapse, your dentist would most likely advise you to wear the retainer full-time (day and night) for at least two to six months. Following that, you will be required to wear the dental retainer at night for the rest of your life.

Space maintainers

Typically, children lose their milk teeth between the ages of six and seven. However, accidents or tooth decay can sometimes result in the early loss of one or more of these teeth. A space maintainer keeps the vacant space to stop the neighboring teeth from growing in a way that hinders the eruption of future adult teeth.

Extraction

In severe cases of crowding, one or more teeth may need to be removed to create enough space for the remaining teeth to align properly.

Palatal expander

A palate expander is an oral appliance that is used to widen the narrow upper jaw. You may need to wear a palate expander for a few weeks, several months, or perhaps a year, depending on your age and the severity of your orthodontic issue.
